CELEBRATING THE HOLIDAY SEASON AT IONA

On December 6, Mission & Ministry collaborated with the Performing Arts Department and the Sigma Delta Phi fraternity to host the 2025 Lessons and Carols event. This event welcomed guests from Iona and the local community to the Arrigoni Center for a candle-lit, ecumenical service that combined music and scripture readings of the Advent Season. Student performers from Iona’s Music Ministry, Vocal Ensemble, Singers, and NightinGAELS, as well as a trio of Father Vaughn Fayle, Dr. Edward Hardy, and Iona student Marcus Fakhoury ’26, all performed and sang at the event.

From the perspective of a classical composer-violinist, I created musical portraits that reflect America's pre-civil rights oppression, the celebration of the Harlem Renaissance, and the landscape of political, social, and economic experiences. This dissertation can also serve as a tool for various individuals: fellow violinists seeking modern techniques that bridge classical music to popular music, composers in search of original compositions responding to our current times, and storytellers seeking an understanding of how music can be composed using literature as a structure.

The Festival of Lessons and Carols is a service of Scripture and song that dates to the late 19th century. In this service, we listen to nine Scripture lessons which recount the Fall, the promise of a Messiah, the incarnation, and the Great Commission to preach the Good News. Each lesson is followed by a carol or other song that reflects on the lesson's message. Musical preludes and interludes will be performed by guest violinist Dr. Edward W. Hardy, along with Iona University's pianist Fr. Vaughn Fayle, OFM Ph.D., and cellist Marcus Fakhhoury, '26. Admission is free and all ages are welcome.

The music was performed by an exceptional group of musicians, who played perfectly with each other despite practicing together for the first time 24 hours before the event. Dr. Vaughn Fayle, a Scholar in Residence at Iona who specializes in The Enlightenment and its music, led the lecture portion of the concert, as well as performing on the piano. The violin was parts were performed by Dr. Edward Hardy, who is a composer, teacher and performer who specializes in working with minority students and persons of color in music.

"These days, there seems to be a real separation between performers and composers. Eddie is a well-rounded, remarkable musician who can do different musical styles, arrangements and composing," Fulks said. In addition to completing his program in three years, I am not aware of any student who has done more performing than he has in these past few years. He's a stellar example of a young man who is embarking on a wonderful career," he said.

Laura Benanti's solo show Laura Benanti: Nobody Cares will return Off-Broadway next month. The Tony winner's solo comedy played three nights only at Audible's Minetta Lane Theatre in February, and will now return venue from May 9-June 2. Joining Laura onstage as her “Inner Demons” are vocalists Barrie McLain and Chelsea Lee Williams. Todd Almond music directs the band, comprised of Carl Carter on bass, Clayton Craddock on drums, Edward W. Hardy on violin, Ann Klein on guitar, and Daniel A. Weiss on keyboards/guitar.

On February 15, 2024, Assemblymember Eddie Gibbs will be holding a prayer at the Harlem African Burial Ground from 2:30-3:30PM to honor and remember the souls that rest at the site. Violinist Edward W. Hardy will perform original music of prayer for residents of Harlem and NYS government officials... beyond his history of premiering contemporary works, his dissertation, A Compendium of Three Musical Works Inspired by the African American Experience: Recordings, Commentary, and Pedagogical Observations, is scheduled to be published in May 2024.

Winners of the 2024 Angie Southard Music Competition will perform on Monday, February 26th, 2024, at the UNC Campus Commons Performance Hall. This concert will begin with the Bear Lake Wind Quintet (2nd prize winners), followed by a performance of “Born Free,” a song cycle composed and performed by violinist Edward W. Hardy, featuring soprano Courtney Caston and pianist Jordan Ortman (3rd prize winners), and will conclude with pianist Alejandro Jose Arroyo Alberto (1st prize winner). This concert, hosted by the University of Northern Colorado, is free and open to the Colorado community.”

Featuring pieces for piano, violin, voice, koto, erhu and shakuhachi, pianist Sho Kuon brings a new musical perspective to the stage through eclectic instrumental arrangements and different performative approaches. Kuon plays with various musical colors, textures, and tones that highlight the playful side of the all-Sho Kuon program. Performers: Sho Kuon - Piano, Andy Lin - Erhu, Yuko Tsuda- Soprano, Edward W. Hardy - Violin, Yoshiaki Okawa - Koto, Greg Pattillo - Flute, Seizan Fukuda - Shakuhachi, Lawrence Craig - Vocals, Raphael Torn - Percussion, and the Japan Choral Harmony.
THE CLASSICAL THEATRE OF HARLEM TO RECEIVE $75,000 GRANT FROM THE NATIONAL ENDOWMENT FOR THE ARTS

The Classical Theatre of Harlem has announced it has been approved by the National Endowment for the Arts (NEA) for a Grants for Arts Projects award of $75,000.00... The 2024 CTH season will also include the following performances: February 1, 2024: Young Gifted and Black Performance featuring Edward W. Hardy, Kaden Kennedy, Roen Jones, and Boubacar Diallo, hosted by New York Life.

These collective winners are excited to share their music selections next month during UNC's campus-wide "Common Hour" series. Violinist Edward W. Hardy says, "I am deeply honored to have earned the third prize in UNC's Southard Music Competition, and it's a privilege to be recognized with a song cycle that I composed! Interestingly, that performance in the competition happened to be the third time I've played Born Free. I can't wait to share these original songs with Greeley and the UNC community."
